By: E&P Staff The New York Times Syndicate is offering a special election-oriented "Families Today" column by Dr. T. Berry Brazelton and Dr. Joshua Sparrow.
In the 700-word piece, the doctors say candidates should declare their positions on issues such as preventive health care, high-quality education, safe neighborhoods, and "a planet with a healthy future."
They also cite disturbing statistics about the social consequences of neglecting children. In the U.S., 12.9 million children live below the poverty line and another 15.7 million in low-income families; together, that's nearly 40% of children. "Of all the wealthy democracies in the world, only Mexico has a higher percentage of children living in poverty," say the doctors.
Brazelton heads the Brazelton Touchpoints Center, which supports children and their families. Sparrow is a child psychiatrist who's director of special initiatives for the center.
