Family-Owned Papers Sold in Kansas

By: E&P Staff Unable to meet the growing needs of its properties, the McLaughlin family announced the sale of their community newspapers in Paola, Osawatomie, and Louisburg, Kan., to the Bradley family, owners of the St. Joseph (Mo.) News-Press.

"We see this as a unique opportunity to pass on newspapers we care deeply about to another newspaper family with similar news values, local emphasis and a commitment to small communities," said Phil McLaughlin, whose family published newspapers for 84 years, in a statement. "Our company has become too large in staff and management needs for a couple to handle alone. As our communities grow, so will the newspapers. This problem was certain to worsen over time."

The sale, expected to close Oct. 1, includes the twice-weekly Miami County Republic and the weekly Osawatomie Graphic and Louisburg Herald. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Also earlier this month, the News Eagle, a three-times-a-week paid paper in Hawley, Penn., was sold to Liberty Group Newspapers. "I've been pleased to be a representative of The Fourth Estate for nearly 25 years in Wayne and Pike counties," said John William Johnson, the former owner of the News Eagle, in a statement. "I'm now headed out West for some different writing projects."

Liberty Group Newspapers publishes The Wayne Independent in Honesdale, Penn. The amount of the sale was not disclosed.
