'Fayetteville Observer' Sheds 21 Jobs

By: E&P Staff Fayetteville Publishing Co., parent of The Fayetteville (N.C.) Observer, is eliminating 21 jobs through a combination of buyouts and layoffs, the paper reported Thursday.

In a letter to employees, Observer Publisher Charles Broadwell said the cuts were necessitated by lower revenue and higher costs at the privately held company. Broadwell said he could not rule out further cuts.

Of the 21 positions cut, 12 were voluntary buyouts, Broadwell said. Among those taking the buyout, the paper said, was Business Editor Don Worthington.

After the cuts, the Observer and its sibling publications will employ about 275 full-time employees and 110 part-time workers.

The layoffs were the first since 1990, when the Observer merged with its sibling The Fayetteville Times.

In addition to the daily, Fayetteville Publishing produces the Sandspur, Carolina Trader, Next! magazine, and Acento Latino in the Fayetteville area. It owns the Iwanna classified advertising papers that serve Asheville, N.C., and Greenville, S.C.
