By: Staff reports But Clinton Administration, Others Not Happy
A Congressional commission voted last week to urge lawmakers to continue the extension of
a moratorium on new Web taxes for the next five years, Reuters reports. But the 19-member
panel didn't produce a two-thirds majority needed for its plan to be considered a formal
recommendation to Congress.
The panel also voted for the elimination of existing Internet taxes. A three-year
moratorium on new Net taxes enacted by Congress is set to expire in October 2001.
The Clinton administration, with three representatives on the panel, denounced the plan.
'The report does not include a description of many of the substantive proposals presented
to the commission,' Deputy Treasury Secretary Stuart Eizenstat told Reuters.
Some analysts believe the issue could become a big debate in this year's presidential
election.
