By: E&P Staff "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" may not be the first movie to come to mind when considering great American films, but the Alliance of Women Film Journalists thinks it is.
The group, which is a nationwide organization of women who write professionally about film, recently compiled its Top 100 Films List to counterpoint the American Film Institute's. The two groups agree on some titles, but the AWFJ lists many more titles directed by women, not to mention foreign films.
The group notes that of 400 films nominated for AFI?s list, only 4.5 were directed by women. Its list includes a few more in that category (such as "Lost in Translation" and the aforementioned "Fast Times") but also tends to pick films with strong female characters played by a Katharine Hepburn or Simone Signoret.
Others on the AWFL list include, just to consider the "A's": "Annie Hall," "Amelie," "Alien," and "The African Queen."
