Winning photographs also appear in the October issue of Editor & Publisher magazine, which features a photo of Krain on the cover. The images will also be showcased at the E&P booth at the Oct. 21-23
PhotoPlus Expo at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. That event is partly sponsored by our sister publication,
Photo District News.
This year?s contest drew hundreds of entries from U.S. dailies, weeklies, and photo services, as well as foreign outlets. They were judged in four categories and in four circulation sizes, making for 16 winners plus the grand prize award. Judges included E&P?s editor, art/design director, and photo editor.
The categories are: News (spot/general), Feature, Sports, and Multiple Images/Photo Essay (up to 10 images).
The circulation levels are: Less than 25,000 weekday circulation, 25,000-99,999, 100,000-249,999, and more than 250,000.

Our grand-prize winning photographer, Benjamin Krain of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, went to Afghanistan late last year with reporter Bob Wigginton. Many days brought danger from armed men riding the countryside, opium growers and dealers, and Taliban fighters looking to kidnap journalists. On other days they merely had to deal with desert heat, rampant disease, and a shortage of drinking water.

Krain, who shot with a Canon 1D and 17-35mm and 70-210mm lenses, captured literally thousands of images. Upon their return, the two journalists produced for their paper a striking 16-page supplement of words and more than 50 images, published on Feb. 1, 2004. 10 of these photos are presented in our galleries with the other prize-winning selections.
All images that are featured as E&P's Photo of the Week are automatically entered in the Photos of the Year competition. Those interested in making submissions for Photo of the Week can check out the submission details at
