By: E&P Staff A film about legendary Chicago columnist Mike Royko is in the works, the Chicago Tribune reported Saturday.
Norman Skul, a freelance information technology consultant, has finished filming the first third of the movie, which will be based on three Royko columns, Tribune staff writer John Keilman reported.
The first part of the film will be based on the column "A November Farewell," in which Royko reminisces about vacationing with his first wife, Carol, in a Wisconsin summer cabin. Carol Royko died in 1979.
"I wanted to bring out his love for Carol that he didn't share with the public," the actor playing Royko, Robert Nunes, told the Tribune.
The second part of the planned 30-minute film will be based on "Shortage of Short Greeks Ruining Us," Royko's 1986 lament about poor service at restaurants. Skul told the Tribune he had not yet decided what column to dramatize for the last part of the movie.
In his 30-year career, Royko wrote for the old Chicago Daily News, and, when it folded, the Chicago Sun-Times. He moved to the Tribune in 1984 after the Sun-Times was bought by Rupert Murdoch. Royko died in 1997.
