By: E&P Staff L.A. Weekly has more finalists in this year's Alternative Newsweekly Awards than any other alt weekly. Its 10 finalists in the category for over-50,000 circulation put it well ahead of the second-place Houston Press, with four. In the under-50,000 category, Folio Weekly of Jacksonville, Fla., and Independent Weekly of Durham, N.C., tied for the lead with six finalists each.
The list of finalists for the annual competition was announced yesterday by the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies.
The rankings of the finalists within each category will be announced at a luncheon on June 17 at the AAN's annual convention, to be held in San Diego. Dan Savage, editor of The Stranger in Seattle and the "Savage Love" sex-advice columnist, will host the luncheon.
This is the 10th year of the awards, which recognize the best work in the 123 newsweeklies that belong to AAN. Of the 97 papers that entered the competition, 70 earned finalist spots in at least one category.
The complete list of finalists is available on
AAN's Web site.
