The Financial Times has appointed Derek Brower as U.S. news editor in New York to lead all day-to-day operations of the news organization’s American network.
Brower will oversee the nearly 90 editorial staff the FT has in New York and bureaus in Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston. He will be responsible for coverage decisions on some of the most important topics across the FT report, including American politics, Wall Street banks, Silicon Valley tech giants and Texas oil majors.
Brower assumes the role after having served as U.S. political news editor since 2023, during which time he shepherded the FT’s coverage of the 2024 presidential election. He joined the FT in 2020 as U.S. energy editor, leading the team of U.S.-based energy reporters who covered the industry’s upheaval following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
“Derek’s ability to harness the FT’s editorial talent during the presidential campaign was a wonder to behold, and is one of the most important reasons we’ve seen such a huge increase in our American readership over the last 18 months,” said Peter Spiegel, U.S. managing editor. “I can't think of anyone more qualified to lead the network going into the new Trump era.”
Brower succeeds Andrew Edgecliffe-Johnson, one of the FT’s most veteran journalists, who will be leaving to pursue other journalism projects.
