'Financial Times' Works On Tablet PC Version

Posted
By: Jim Rosenberg With the launch of the Tablet PC in New York Thursday, newspapers' dream of some portable, digital version may be coming closer to reality.

Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates said the Financial Times, a London-based broadsheet with significant circulation in the United States, and several magazines are working with Microsoft to exploit the new device (though publishers were not among those listed in its Rapid Adoption Program).

Developed by several computer makers to run a special version of Microsoft's Windows XP operating system (and with applications from numerous software developers), the Tablet PC is portable, lightweight and can be operated by keyboard, mouse, or by writing on the screen with a digital pen.

Gates predicted the device will be used more frequently and spontaneously than desktop or laptop computers because it can be taken anywhere and allows more-natural reading and writing.
