Fire Damages 'NY Daily News' Printing Plant

By: Firefighters Saturday morning battled a fire at a Daily News printing facility and warehouse in Jersey City.

The two-alarm fire was reported at 1:30 a.m. and put under control at 2:12 a.m. by about 65 firefighters, said Armando Roman, the city's director of fire and emergency services.

Roman described the building as a big warehouse and printing facility. He said the fire broke out in an area containing printing presses and said that portion of the building sustained heavy damage.

"It was a stubborn fire," Roman said, mainly because the oil-based ink used in the presses fueled the flames.

One civilian worker was transported by ambulance to Jersey City Medical Center, according to Roman who said he had no information on his condition or the severity of his injuries.

A spokeswoman for the Daily News, Jennifer Mauer, in a statement, described the fire as a "small mechanical fire." She said the blaze disrupted part of the newspaper's Saturday production but said the Sunday print run was expected to be normal.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
