Fired 'Miami Herald' Columnist DeFede Lands TV News Gig

Posted
By: Joe Strupp Fired Miami Herald columnist Jim DeFede, who lost his job last summer after secretly taping a phone conversation with a source who later killed himself in the Herald lobby, has gotten another job at a local television station, the Herald reported Friday.

DeFede will be a reporter/commentator for WFOR-TV, the local CBS affiliate, according to the paper, which reported he would do ''news analysis, observations and opinion.'' DeFede had to leave his columnist job after telling editors he had secretly taped the phone call with former county commissioner Arthur E. Teele shortly before Teele committed suicide.

Herald editors had received harsh criticism from many in the industry after they chose to dismiss DeFede just hours after the incident occurred. The paper cited Florida law that requires both parties of a taped phone conversation to be aware of the recording. A review by law enforcement officials found no grounds to prosecute DeFede.
