By: E&P Staff Publishers from 55 U.S. free dailies are set to gather in St. Petersburg, Fla., for the first annual free daily conference organized by Gansevoort Media.

The conference, "The Free Daily Newspaper: Innovation and Strategy," will be held June 18 and 19 and hosted by the St. Petersburg Times, publisher of the free daily tbt*.

Topics to be discussed will include the pros and cons of different free daily models in the U.S. and Canada, legal restrictions on free daily distribution, the use of reader-generated content, and advertiser response to the free daily concept.

"The free daily newspaper is the first major innovation in the newspaper business in a generation," Henry E. Scott, Gansevoort Media managing director, said in a statement. "In the last six years the number of free dailies published in North America has more than quadrupled, with most of the growth happening in the last two years."
