By: E&P Staff Mexico City's Excelsior, bought and re-launched this year by healthcare, tourism, and multimedia conglomerate Grupo Angeles, headed by Olegario V?zquez Ra?a and Olegario V?zquez Aldir, is the first Latin American publisher to buy the K4 publishing system from SoftCare GmbH, Hamburg, Germany.
It also will be the largest K4 implementation. With the help of Managing Editor Inc. distribution partner Informatica Dalai SA de CV, Excelsior is deploying 160 seats. Until now, the largest daily newspaper installation has been Russia's Vedomosty, with approximately 100 users.
The pilot installation reached full K4 production in 20 days, including planning, implementation, configuration, training and follow-up. Editorial Director Daniel Moreno called K4 editorial software an "indispensable instrument to assemble and successfully launch such a challenging and big project ... in record time."
Along with its K4 purchase, Excelsior added MEI's Page Director Advertising Layout System (ALS) to its production workflow. Fast ad-dummying software, ALS simplifies layout by interpreting information from a front-end system and automatically placing ads on pages, allowing control over numerous attributes such as editorial and advertising requirements, color press configurations and conflict management.
Used in 14 countries, K4 is based on InDesign and InCopy and supports Mac OS X and Windows clients in mixed-platform environments. Server software is available for Mac OS X Server, Windows, Sun Solaris and Linux.
