FIU Launches Campaign to Name J-School for Legendary Miami Reporter Gene Miller

Posted
By: E&P Staff A fundraising effort was launched today to name Florida International University's School Of Journalism for the late Gene Miller, the well-known reporter and editor.

Miller won two Pulitzers for local news reporting at the Herald during his 48 years there. "He also taught several generations of us who passed through the Miami Herald newsroom his excellent brand of hard-hitting, fact-filled reporting of clearly written stories -- a process many of us called having our copy Millerized," said Jane Daugherty, an associate professor in the FIU J-program, which serves 2,200 undergraduates.

The goal, she said, is to raise $5 million (or $2.5 milion just to name a chair for him). Helping the effort is his widow, Caroline Heck Miller, the former Herald reporter who is now an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Miami.
The state matches each contribution dollar for dollar.

Miller died in 2005 at the age of 76. It was said that inspired generations of journalists with the motto "There is no substitute for news." After retiring in 2001 he continued to work with Herald staffers as a writing coach and mentor.
