Five years ago this summer, Europeans had recently showered a pair of nascent news sites with money. De Correspondent had crowdfunded $1.3 million in the Netherlands through crowdfunding in 2013 and Krautreporter was in the home stretch of its campaign in Germany which ultimately raised $1.38 million.
