'Flint Journal' Offers Buyouts

Posted
By: Joe Strupp The Flint (Mich.) Journal is offering an unusually generous voluntary buyout package to staffers, according to a local television station, which reported on its Web site that the paper would give four weeks' pay for each year of service to those who take the offer.

WJRT-TV reported that the buyout offer is aimed at reducing expenses without layoffs, adding that Publisher Dave Sharp declined to reveal other specifics or indicate how many employees he hoped would accept the offer.

"Sharp says he has no target number of employees he's trying to buy out, but the process should be complete by Oct. 29," the station reported, adding, "For readers, it may result in some familiar columnists, reporters and photographers disappearing from the publication."

Journal officials could not immediately be reached for comment Tuesday.

Sharp also "insists the circulation of the Journal is strong, claiming it was the only newspaper in the state to grow in circulation last year," WJRT reported.
