'Florida Times-Union' to Cut 8 Comics, Asks Readers for Picks

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Florida Times-Union is facing a dilemma no newspaper ever wants to experience -- an action that is guaranteed to anger its readers.

It isn?t cutting staff. It?s cutting eight strips from its daily and Sunday comics.

?Financial realities are forcing us to make some difficult and unpopular decisions,? a story on the paper?s site reads. The Jacksonville daily is asking readers to visit an online ?Comic Strip Survivor? voting area to make their vote heard in the decision of which strips get the boot. Registration is required.

Readers who visit the page are asked to vote for their favorites; the strips that receive the least votes will be removed.

?The comics page is known as the third rail of the newspaper industry,? the story ads. ?No editor in his right mind will touch the comics unless it is absolutely necessary. We don't want to make our readers unhappy. But economic realities make this necessary.

?We needed to make a big cut. Eliminating eight comics brings the kind of savings we needed,? the story adds. ?It is painful, but necessary.?

Visit the site here to cast your vote.
