By: E&P Staff The St. Augustine (Fla.) Record reports that it will be printed at The Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville beginning Aug. 1.
Consolidation of the sister papers' printing is being made to cut costs and provide the smaller paper with more color, according to Record Publisher Derek May, who said the number of jobs to be eliminated had not been determined.
"This will create a few jobs, and there are a few people the Times-Union is going to need," May is quoted saying. "There will be a net job reduction, but, because of various factors, I can't say exactly how many."
In addition to more color, the Times-Union's Goss Metro presses will print copies that are slightly wider than those that rolled off the Record's Goss Urbanite press.
Only a 45-minute drive from St. Augustine, the Times-Union already is shipped "down here on trucks at night," May said. "So we can deliver for them."
Augusta, Ga.-based Morris Communications owns the 18,048-circulation Record and 122,655-circulation Times-Union. The St. Augustine daily's circulation dipped about 500 copies weekdays and Sundays between March FAS-FAX reports this year and last. Jacksonville saw circulation decline by almost 22,000 copies over the same period.
