By: Staff Reports Free Content Beefs Up Special-interest Verticals
Flywheel Media, formerly known as Thomson Target Media and Thomson Interactive Media, yesterday
announced that its special-interest content is now free to newspaper Web sites as locally branded
online plug-ins.
Flywheel is offering the content to newspaper sites that want to build verticals in special-interest
areas. Content currently being offered for these verticals comes from Flywheel's Coverstory
entertainment site, Body & More women's health and fitness site, and FreeZone, a site targeting
children ages 7-14. Flywheel intends to provide content as early as this fall from ActiveTimes, serving
adults over 50, and Track & Speed, covering NASCAR racing.
Citing verticals as the major source of online ad dollars in the future, Paul A. Camp, CEO of Flywheel
Media, says 'Unfortunately, most local newspapers simply don't have the resources to create deep and
rich online verticals to compete with the likes of Mr. Showbiz or iVillage.'
Flywheel Media reports that 450 local media partners already use the company's online verticals. National
advertising has been sold into the company's affiliate network and advertising revenue is shared with
media partners.
Flywheel Media, part of Thomson Newspapers, was officially launched on May 15.
