By: E&P Staff James F. Chambers Jr., former publisher and chairman of the board at the Dallas Times Herald, died Thursday at the age of 93.
Chambers began his career in journalism at the Dallas Dispatch where he held a summer job wrote obituaries and small items just after graduation from prep school. At the end of that summer, instead of going to school for engineering, Chambers decided to stay at the Dispatch where he worked for seven years and eventually became city editor.
After a brief stint in public relations during the 1940s, Chambers returned to the newspaper industry as news editor of the Dallas Times Herald and moved through the ranks to become publisher in 1967. He retired from the Times Herald in 1980.
