Karen Wittmer Jekel, former publisher of the East Valley Tribune for many years and a community leader in the East Valley and Scottsdale, died Dec. 2 after a brief battle with cancer. She was 65.
Her career spanned newspapers in Arizona, California and Ohio with Thomson Newspapers, Freedom Communications and Gannett. Wittmer Jekel retired in 2007.
