Former 'Evening News' Carrier on Trial Again for Murder

By: A former newspaper carrier in Sault Ste. Marie convicted a decade ago of killing his boss is on trial once more.

Nathan Paul Hanna is charged with murdering Anthony Gillespie, circulation manager of The Evening News, in 1998.

Hanna has acknowledged shooting Gillespie at his desk as staffers ran for cover, but claims he was insane at the time. The jury rejected that defense the next year, finding him guilty but mentally ill. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

A federal judge ordered a new trial in 2005, saying Hanna's confession should not have been admitted into evidence and that the prosecutor made improper comments.

Jury selection for the new trial began Wednesday and was completed Thursday.
