By: E&P Staff Javier J. Aldape has been named vice president of niche products for the newspaper division of The E.W. Scripps Co.
Aldape, 36, recently resigned as vice president of audience development for the Los Angeles Times, while also serving as general manager and editor of Tribune Co.'s Spanish-language daily Hoy Los Angeles.
Aldape is charged with identifying opportunities for market-specific or chain-wide print and online speciality publications. He starts the position April 14.
"Javier has a long and impressive track record of expanding the audience and revenue bases of newspapers," Mark G. Contreras, senior vice president of newspapers for Scripps, said in a statement. "He has demonstrated the ability to bring together newspaper leaders to create products that lure new readers and appeal to advertisers."
From 2005 to 2007, Aldape was editor and vice president of product and audience development for Hoy, which then had editions in in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Tribune sold the New York edition to ImpreMedia, publisher of the New York City daily El Diario La Prensa.
Before joining Tribune, Aldape worked at the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram, where he served as publisher of its Spanish-language daily, Diario La Estrella.
From 1996 to 1998, he was the managing editor of El Telegrafo in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
