Former IAPA President Garcia Of Mexican 'Novedades' Dead At 77

By: E&P Staff Andres Garcia Lavin, the president of the Mexican daily President Novedades de Quintana Roo and former president of the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) died Monday at age 77, the Miami-based press freedom association announced.

Garcia Lavin was IAPA president for the 1982-1983 term. He first joined the association in 1965, and was member of its board of directors between 1969-1981. He also served a term as vice president of the World Press Freedom Committee.

He is survived by his wife, Anita Garcia; his six children, Andres (Andy), Alice, Camilo, Alejandro, Anita and Gerardo, and numerous grandchildren.

A funeral mass was scheduled for Tuesday at the Merida Cathedral in the Yucatan city of Merida.
