By: E&P Staff A former Janesville Gazette editor is suing an employment agency that she claims edited typos and gibberish into her resume and then sent it out to hundreds of prospective employers, according to an article in Tuesday's edition of the Wisconsin newspaper.
Barbara Uebelacker, who was managing editor at the Gazette from July 1999 until November 2005, is suing Florida-based Allen and Associates for "damages in excess of $75,000 for humiliation, mental anguish, emotional pain and loss of professional reputation," according to the published report.
Uebelacker paid a $1,720 fee to the firm to help her find a job in public relations, and the company proceeded to mail an introductory letter to 200 different employers on her behalf. The lawsuit, however, claims the letter contained a false signature and an incomprehensible series of letters and numbers that clearly should have been edited out.
Several days later, the paper reports, Uebelacker received a copy of her letter from a Madison, Wis., PR firm with the gibberish and the words "executive metro editor" circled and the word "Proofread."
Allen and Associates subsequently refunded Uebelacker's $1,720, but the media professional is seeking the additional damages, claiming her reputation as a writer and editor has been severely damaged.
