Former 'LA Times' Editor Carroll Heading to Harvard

By: Joe Strupp Former Los Angeles Times Editor John Carroll will soon join the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics, and Public Policy at Harvard University, according to the Boston Phoenix.

The alternative paper reported Monday that Alex Jones, director of the Shorenstein Center, confirmed that Carroll "will be landing in Cambridge soon." Jones told the paper that Carroll "has been invited to spend a semester as a Shorenstein fellow starting in January." But the paper also said Carroll may serve a one-year appointment as a Knight Visiting Lecturer, which would require approval of the Knight Foundation and the Kennedy School of Government.

Carroll left the Times earlier this year after five years as editor. While the paper won a person-best five Pulitzer Prizes in 2004 under Carroll's leadership, it struggled financially. Carroll has admitted that severe budget cuts were part of the reason for his departure.

Carroll had actually planned to take a different Harvard post just before landing the Times job in 2000, as curator of The Nieman Foundation. But he chose the Times post instead, allowing Bob Giles to take the Nieman position.
