By: James B. "Jimmy" Skewes, whose family owned newspapers and broadcast outlets in east Mississippi for more than 60 years and who served many years as publisher of The Meridian Star, has died at the age of 81.

Skewes died Monday at Riley Hospital in Meridian, said Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler. Officials with James F. Webb Funeral Home in Meridian said Tuesday that funeral arrangements were incomplete. A list of survivors was not available.

The Skewes family bought the Meridian newspaper in the 1920s and in later years bought WTOK-TV and radio station WMOX, both in Meridian. The family sold the newspaper and its broadcast interests in the 1980s.

The Meridian newspaper is now owned by Birmingham, Ala.-based Community Newspapers.
