Former Mobile, Ala., Editor Bert Hanneman Dies at 77

By: Longtime editor Albert William "Bert" Hanneman, who worked for both the Mobile Press and the Mobile Register, died of an apparent heart attack, relatives said. He was 77.

The native of Baldwin, N.Y., formerly lived in Mobile and had been living in Gulf Shores for the past 12 years. He died at a hospital Saturday.

Hanneman served about 15 years as news editor of the Register before being named special sections editor in 1991. He retired in March 1994.

After joining the Press-Register staff in 1968, he served as a reporter and copy editor for both the Press and the Register. He was promoted to assistant news editor of the Register in 1969 and became news editor of the Register in 1971.

Hanneman also served as news editor of the Press for a number of years.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Mary Jo Hanneman of Gulf Shores; two daughters, Pamela Swearingen of Spanish Fort and Cynthia Hanneman of Mobile, a brother and three grandsons.

Hanneman's funeral was set for noon Wednesday at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home.
