Former 'National Review' Editor Regrets Rejecting Cartoonist

By: E&P Staff Why does ComicsReporter.com have a link to a National Review Online article marking the 50th anniversary of National Review magazine?

Because, in today's Q&A piece, former NR Managing Editor Priscilla Buckley recalled that her biggest mistake was deciding, with brother William F. Buckley, that cartoonist Jeff MacNelly "was not sophisticated enough" to appear in the conservative NR. Five years later, NR changed its mind and asked MacNelly if it could publish his work.

The late MacNelly was a Pulitzer-Prize winning editorial cartoonist syndicated by Tribune Media Services, for which he also created the "Shoe" comic.

Today's 50th-anniversary Q&A was conducted by National Review Online Editor Kathryn Jean Lopez, who writes a column syndicated by Newspaper Enterprise Association. And the aforementioned William F. Buckley, who founded NR in 1955, does a column distributed by Universal Press Syndicate.

How Dublin Inquirer uses legal risk assessments to keep accountability journalism moving

When Dublin Inquirer publishes a sensitive accountability story, the challenge isn’t just reporting the facts. It’s deciding whether a small, seven-person newsroom can afford the legal risks that sometimes come with telling the public what it needs to know. For editor and co-founder Sam Tranum and deputy editor Lois Kapila, those decisions once came down to late-night conversations and educated guesswork. Today, the independent Dublin newsroom relies on Reporters Shield’s Legal Risk Assessment service to help identify potential legal vulnerabilities before publication—allowing journalists to move forward with greater confidence while keeping important stories alive.
