By: E&P Staff Robert G. Fichenberg, former editor and Washington bureau chief of Newhouse News Service, died Saturday at his home in Alexandria, Va. He was 85.
Fichenberg worked in Washington for 12 years after moving from New York state in 1978, where he worked as a reporter and editor for 38 years. He headed Newhouse until 1990.
"He had a real zest for journalism, for news, for the world around him," David Starr, senior editor of Newhouse, said in a statement. "He truly was one hell of a journalist and a really fine editor."
Fichenberg started his career at the Adirondack Daily Enterprise in Saranac Lake, N.Y. He also worked at the Binghamton (N.Y.) Press, and the Knickerbocker News in Albany, N.Y., where he was executive editor.
In addition to a funeral Thursday, a memorial is being planned at the National Press Club in Washington at a date to be announced.
