By: Joe Strupp Howard Schneider, the former editor of Newsday in Melville, N.Y., who spent 35 years at the paper before leaving last fall, is joining Stony Brook University, part of the State University of New York, as a visiting professor in the English Department, the university announced Wednesday. He will teach a course titled The Ethics and Values of the American Press, according to Stony Brook President Shirley Strum Kenny.
?Howie Schneider is an immensely respected journalist who cares deeply about the larger issues surrounding journalism and a free press,? Kenny said in a statement. ?What he says and teaches is going to be exciting, engaging, and thought-provoking. Our students are going to love him.?
Kenny said Schneider also would spearhead the process to evaluate a possible journalism degree program, which would be the first accredited program of its kind in the State University of New York system. Stony Brook currently offers courses in journalism, but it does not have a formal program that leads to a degree.
?The American press is at a crossroads,? Schneider said in a statement. ?On one hand, we?re in a remarkable revolution in communications that promises to transform how we deliver the news, to erase the lines between print and broadcast, to topple the economic barriers that currently stifle competition, and perhaps, to redefine who our journalists are.?
Schneider, who left Newsday in November, began his career at there as a reporter and also served as city editor of the paper?s fledging New York City edition, which folded in 1995 after a 10-year run.
