Former Newspaper Employees to Launch Competing Mount Airy Paper

By: A group of former newspaper employees from Mount Airy and Elkin have joined together to distribute a competing newspaper in Mount Airy.

The Messenger is set to launch Monday. It will compete with The Mount Airy News in the town of 8,000 people near the Virginia border.

Several former employees from The Mount Airy News and the nearby Elkin Tribune are running the paper.

Michael Milligan is publisher of The Messenger. Milligan resigned from the same position at The Mount Airy News on June 18 after cuts were made to his staff. Rebel Good served as The Tribune's publisher for 29 years, and also quit his job to serve as The Messenger's editor.

Connecticut-based Heartland Publications purchased The Mount Airy News and The Tribune last month in a deal that included 16 newspapers overall.
