Former Pulitzer Chairman Oppel Joins Consulting Firm

By: Veteran journalist and former Pulitzer Prize Board chairman Richard Oppel has joined the consulting firm Public Strategies Inc. as a senior adviser.

The Austin-based public affairs consulting company made the announcement Tuesday.

For more than 30 years, Oppel served as editor of three newspapers and as a Washington bureau chief for Knight Ridder Newspapers. He most recently was editor of the Austin American-Statesman, from 1995 to 2008. He previously was an editor of the Tallahassee (Fla.) Democrat and the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer. He was also a bureau chief for the Associated Press in Michigan.

Oppel was named editor of the year by the National Press Foundation in 1988. He was a member of the Pulitzer Prize Board for nine years, having served as chairman in 2008-2009.
