By: Joe Strupp Jerry Roberts, whose resignation as editor of the Santa Barbara News-Press in 2006 launched an ongoing newsroom battle with owner Wendy McCaw, reports that he has successfully fought off a lawsuit from the paper.
But, since the paper is appealing the decision, he is again asking for donations to help his legal battle.
On his blog at www.jerryrobertandfriends.org, the former editor reveals McCaw's case against him has been dismissed by an arbitrator. But it has also been appealed.
Thus, Roberts is asking online, and in an e-mail to friends and supporters -- and E&P -- for donations to help his legal problems.
"All the money we raise is administered by the Santa Barbara-based Lawyers Alliance for Free Speech Rights," Roberts writes. "The group was formed specifically to help journalists who came under attack in the News-Press Mess, and its attorneys voluntarily represented a number of folks subpoenaed in my case, or one of the other many actions McCaw initiated.
"It is my intention to return to the Alliance as much of the money raised through the group as possible, after paying out-of-pocket legal costs and debts, using whatever financial award I receive. That money would then be available to be redirected to organizations and causes working on behalf of embattled journalists."
Roberts even advises you can use the online payment system PayPal.
