By: E&P Staff Jonathan Marshall, the longtime editor and publisher of The Scottsdale (Ariz.) Daily Progress who ran against Barry Goldwater for the U.S. Senate in 1974, has died at 84.
Marshall died at his Paradise Valley, Ariz., home Saturday, The Arizona Republic reported Monday in a story by Sadie Jo Smokey with contributions from Diana Balazs. He had been in poor health since the 1990s, his youngest son, Jonathon H. Marshall, told the paper.
Marshall became editor and publisher of the Daily Progress in 1963, and remained in the positions until he sold the paper in 1987.
In 1974, Marshall was the Democratic Party nominee for U.S. Senate against incumbent Barry Goldwater. The Republic reported the two became friends and lunched together.
Marshall served as president of the Arizona Newspapers Association, and is credited with helping craft the state's modern Open Meeting Law and Public Records Law.
He had just published his autobiography "Dateline History: The Life of Journalist Jonathan Marshall."
He is survived by his wife, Maxine; and sons Jonathan and Robert; daughters Lucinda and Laura; and 10 grandsons.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Temple Solely, 6805 E McDonald Drive, Paradise Valley, Ariz.
