By: Texas Journalist Martha Hand Brown, whose career spanned more than 50 years, has died. Her son says she died Saturday from pneumonia at the age of 83.

Brown began her reporting career at age 16, when she started writing for the Arlington Journal while still in school.

After graduating from Arlington High School in 1939, she attended North Texas Agricultural College, now the University of Texas at Arlington, as well as Columbia University and the University of Texas at Austin.

She never obtained a degree, but she was hired in the 1940s to work at the Washington, D.C., bureau of the Gannett newspaper chain during World War II.

She also worked for the AP's bureaus in Austin and Dallas during the war.

Later, she worked as a reporter and writer for the Star-Telegram and The Dallas Morning News and served as publicity director for the State Fair of Texas.

She's survived by her son Kenny, daughter Martha, and twin brother, Bill.

Funeral services are scheduled for Monday at Moore Funeral Home in Arlington.
