By: Joe Strupp Tim McGuire, former editor of The Star Tribune in Minneapolis and a syndicated columnist, will join the Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication in August as the Frank Russell Chair, the university reported Thursday.
McGuire has 30 years of journalism experience, including as editor and senior vice president of the Star Tribune from 1992 to 2002. He also served as managing editor from 1979 to 1992, during which time the paper won a Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting. Since retiring in 2002, McGuire has penned a weekly column for United Media titled "More Than Work," which runs in 33 newspapers and focuses on ethics and values in the workplace. He also served as president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors from 2000 -- 2001.
"Tim McGuire represents the best values of the Cronkite School," Christopher Callahan, dean of the Cronkite School, said in a statement. "He is an innovative newsroom leader with a passion for news and an adherence to the highest ethical standards."
McGuire also has taught at the Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., and at the school of journalism and public policy at Davidson College in Davidson, N.C., the release stated.
"After two professorships, I found that teaching really interests me," McGuire said in a statement. "My reason for joining ASU is a combination of wanting to share my expertise with students and being part of the effort to make Cronkite School an even better journalism school."
