HCM CITY — The HCM City People's Court yesterday handed down a seven-year jail sentence to a former journalist for extorting money from two companies.

Phan Ha Binh, 42, a former deputy managing editor of Tien Phong (Vanguard) newspaper where he had worked since April 2007, was sentenced after the court found him guilty of "taking other people's assets by force."

The court ordered Binh to return VND220 million (US$10,570) which he reportedly received from Nguyen Cam Phuong, PR manager of Sai Gon-Tan Ky Cement JSC.
