Fort Myers 'News-Press' Announces E-Edition

Posted
By: E&P Staff The News-Press of Fort Myers, Fla., has launched an online e-edition that exactly matches the pages of the print edition.

The e-edition had officially launched July 3, 2006, but the News-Press only made it public Wednesday. "We're really only feeling comfortable with it now to just put it out there," Tara Oldham, News-Press circulation sales development manager, told E&P.

"So many people rely now on new technologies," Oldham continued. "But they like the newspaper format. They want to take it with them on their Blackberry or iPod. [The e-edition's] also a green solution because it doesn't use any paper."

The e-edition is designed to exactly duplicate that day's content, from news, photos, and advertising to comics and puzzles. "This is basically a portable newspaper," News-Press Vice President of Circulation Bob Sutherland told the paper. ?You can read it anywhere, anytime."

Currently, the News-Press e-edition is made available to subscribers every morning at no later than 5:30 a.m, at the cost of $1/week plus tax. Oldham says the paper is currently working on coming up with "hybrid subscriptions, where people might get the e-edition during the week and the print edition on weekends."

So far, Oldham says the reaction has been positive: "Customers are really enjoying it ... it's very popular with people who travel, school systems have gotten back to us saying they're using it in foreign language classes [the e-edition can be translated into 11 languages] ... the people who enjoy it the most are snowbirds who come down for a few months and like to keep up with their neighborhoods down here, so they subscribe to it."
