Foul Shot: Newspaper Wrongly Reports Basketball Coach is Dead

Posted
By: (AP) Louisiana State University basketball coach Pokey Chatman gave an update on the condition of former coach Sue Gunter on Sunday after the local newspaper incorrectly reported Gunter had died.

Chatman, whose team is playing in the NCAA tournament regional final here, said Gunter remained hospitalized to recover from pneumonia.

Gunter, who has severe emphysema, retired last April after 40 years of coaching. She has been in the hospital before with respiratory problems and was recently hospitalized again.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press referred to Gunter as the "deceased LSU coach" in a preprinted special section in Sunday's editions about Tennessee coach Pat Summitt's 880th victory. The newspaper printed a correction and apology in the regular sports section.

"This is personal to myself, my staff, and our team. It's a sensitive issue," said Chatman, who played and was an assistant under Gunter. "I have spoken with our staff, our entire team and our congregation of fans. I want to go on record in saying that Sue did have an opportunity to watch the game [Saturday]. She is still in the hospital. She is not in ICU. She is in a private room. She's doing better."

LSU and newspaper officials discussed the error. The newspaper did not have a comment.
