Four Years After Last Audit, 'Chicago Defender' Shows Modest Circ Uptick

Posted
By: Mark Fitzgerald In a U.S. Postal Service (USPS) statement of ownership published Friday, the Chicago Defender asserted its total paid circulation averages 15,534 daily, a 6.7% increase since it last audit more than four years ago.

The black-oriented tabloid, which publishes four days a week, resigned the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) in late 2004, and has apparently not engaged any auditing service since then.

The Defender's last ABC audit, for the six months ended March 31, 2003, showed a weekday circulation of 14,479 and weekend circ of 17,204.

In its USPS statement, the Defender cited its Sept. 28, 2007 issue, the weekend edition published on Fridays, as the "single issue published nearest to filing date." It said the total paid circulation of that edition was 14,784.
