Franklin Makes First Changes at Baltimore 'Sun'

By: Joe Strupp Less than two months into his tenure as the new editor of The Sun in Baltimore, Tim Franklin has made his first organizational changes, which include forming an investigative unit, relocating three editors to new positions, and creating a new demographics beat.

Franklin, who had been editor of the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel, replaced former Sun (Click for QuikCap) editor William Marimow Jan. 6 following Marimow's firing.

The most unique move, creation of a demographics beat, is based on the paper's need to improve coverage of the city's changing population, the editor said.

"We need to do a better job of reflecting the city in the pages of the paper," Franklin said about the new post, which has yet to be filled. "That person will be writing about race, diversity, immigration and be our primary reporter on the census."

Franklin also added one staffer to the Sun's 10-person Washington, D.C., bureau.

The new investigations unit, similar to those Franklin launched in Orlando and during his stint as editor of The Indianapolis Star, will include four reporters and an assistant managing editor for projects. Franklin tapped City Editor John Fairhall for the editing assignment.

Assistant Managing Editor/Sports Sam Davis also is being reassigned to the newly-created post of Assistant Managing Editor/Recruitment and Staff Development, said Franklin. He said a national search is on for a new head of the sports department.

Another new editing post is Assistant Managing Editor/Readership, which will be held by Regional Editor Dave Rosenthal, Franklin said. "He'll be working with me to build and create new sections and come up with ways to develop new content features," Franklin told E&P. The Sun has only two non-Sunday weekly sections -- entertainment on Thursday and food on Wednesday.
