Frederick Herman "Fred" Powell was soon to graduate from the University of Tennessee's School of Journalism when he walked into the Knoxville News Sentinel Nov. 22, 1963, for a scheduled job interview.
It didn't happen that day. President John F. Kennedy had just been shot, and the managing editor informed Mr. Powell he'd have to come back another time.
