By: E&P Staff The Free Lance-Star, Fredericksburg, Va., announced today that it will build a production facility in Fredericksburg Battlefield Industrial Park, adjacent to a rail line and approximately two miles from the newspaper's current location.
William Douglas Properties LLC, a Rowe family partnership of Free Lance-Star shareholders, bought the 24 acres of former farmland for $3 million.
The Free Lance-Star reported that its offices will remain on Amelia Street. That location has been the paper's home since 1965, was expanded in 1991, and houses the company's four radio stations.
"We need greater production capacity, which will require a much larger plant than would be appropriate for downtown," said Nick Cadwallender, associate publisher and son-in-law of Publisher Josiah P. Rowe III. Florence Barnick, an associate publisher and Rowe's daughter, told the paper that the new plant will enable the company to move into commercial printing.
Plans for the plant and its equipment are in the works. Completion is expected in 2008. Operations Director John Jenkins will manage the new facility.
