Freedom Asks Court to Approve 'East Valley Tribune' Sale

Posted
By: E&P Staff Freedom Communications asked a bankruptcy court Tuesday to approve the sale of the East Valley Tribune to 1013 Communications. Freedom expects a hearing to be held in March.

Ed Taylor reported for the East Valley Tribune that court documents reveal the cost of the transaction to be a little over $2 million.

Freedom asked in the filing that any other bids for a deal that also includes Arizona properties the Sun City Daily News-Sun, Ahwatukee Foothills News, Glendale/Peoria Today, and Surprise Today be submitted by March 5.

In 2009 Freedom announced it was shuttering the East Valley Tribune, but a tentative deal was struck with 1013 Communications in November. In January the company agreed to purchase the other Freedom publications as well.

1013 Communications is a newly formed company involves Randy Miller -- owner of Thirteenth Street Media, which publishes the Telluride Daily Planet in Colorado and a free weekly in suburban Tucson, Ariz.

Dirks, Van Essen & Murray represented Freedom Communications in the transaction.
