Freedom Communications to Implement One-Week Furloughs

Posted
By: Joe Strupp Freedom Communications, which owns The Orange County (Calif.) Register, is planning to implement one-week furloughs for all but the most recently hired employees across its many daily and weekly papers, according to a staff memo from President & CEO Scott Flanders.

The memo, dated March 17, states: "the first quarter of 2009 has brought us an economy that is the most challenged since the great depression. Like other businesses, including those in our industry, we need to take additional steps sooner rather than later to try to combat this tough economic environment."

The memo goes on to state that five-day furloughs will be required of nearly all employees at Freedom's 100 daily and weekly papers, with the unpaid days off to be scheduled between April 1, 2009 and June 30, 2009. It adds that those hired within the last six months will be exempt "because, as new associates to the organization, this is the ramp-up period where they are still learning the role and our preference was to not interrupt the process."

Flanders could not be reached for comment Friday. Freedom officials said a press release on the furloughs is likely to come later today.
