As part of its mission to build community and further enhance its coverage of desert cities within Riverside County, Freedom Communications is launching a new newspaper called Desert Enterprise on Fridays starting Feb. 21.

Single copies of Desert Enterprise will be available at 200 news rack and retail locations throughout Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, La Quinta and Indian Wells. Desert Enterprise coverage will also be available online at pe.com as of Feb. 21.

Freedom is also expanding distribution of The Press-Enterprise with Inland SoCal Register into the five desert cities. Desert Enterprise will be included with home-delivered and single copies of The Press-Enterprise in Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, La Quinta and Indian Wells on Fridays, with plans to begin this distribution in April.

“Desert Enterprise will be a community-building newspaper that covers the developments, activities, people and businesses within the desert communities with depth and verve,” said Aaron Kushner, Freedom co-owner and CEO. "As an important part of Riverside County with many deep connections to Orange County and Los Angeles, we are excited to bring our passion for newspapering and community building to the desert communities."

Mike Burns, Publisher of The Press-Enterprise, elaborates: "We are supporting and investing in these vibrant communities with our unique brand of newspaper that will help readers and advertisers grow and thrive. Desert Enterprise together with The Press-Enterprise will contain relevant, inspiring and valuable information that speaks directly to the interests of the desert cities and improves the quality of life in these communities."

Desert Enterprise launches with robust community-level coverage of government and politics, schools, businesses, arts and entertainment, youth sports, inspiring people, health and wellness issues, places of worship, Go+Do events, nonprofits and local opinions.

Roger Ruvolo will serve as editor of Desert Enterprise, and reporters are being assigned to cover each of the five desert cities. In addition, newsroom staff at The Press-Enterprise with Inland SoCal Register will collaborate with Ruvolo to support newsgathering, editing and design of the Desert Enterprise.

To create a distinctly personal and community-minded newspaper, the Desert Enterprise is engaging community and civic leaders to submit guest columns, stories, photos, event listings, ideas for weekly columns and letters to the editor through rruvolo@pe.com.

Desert Enterprise is the latest development in Freedom’s subscriber-focused strategy that includes the expansion of its newspaper portfolio, providing more depth to local content, and launching a subscriber-benefits program and community-building initiatives.

Following the purchase of The Press-Enterprise by Freedom Communications in November, the newspaper launched a dramatically enhanced edition that includes added depth to local news, an expanded columnist roster, enhanced design elements, more color and photos, daily entertainment coverage and TV listings, more diversity in voices and views within its Opinion pages, and a new Inland SoCal Register section focusing on top news from a local perspective on regional, state, national and international news.

The Press-Enterprise with Inland SoCal Register now includes free benefits for seven-day subscribers through its Register Connect membership program. Free benefits and experiences offered through Register Connect program have included four-packs of professional baseball and soccer tickets, amusement park and concert tickets, aquarium passes, meet-and-greet opportunities with celebrities, and gift cheques that benefit local nonprofit institutions.
