By: E & P Staff Two top Freedom Forum appointments were announced on Thursday, with Gene Policinski named executive director of the First Amendment Center and Robbie Morganfield picked to be executive director of the Diversity Institute at Vanderbilt University.

"Gene and Robbie have vast experience and will take their programs to new levels," Freedom Forum Chairman and CEO Charles L. Overby said in the announcement.

Policinski has been acting director of the First Amendment Center since April, when former executive director Ken Paulson was named editor of USA Today. He had been deputy director of the center since 2000. He came to the Freedom Forum in 1996 from USA Today, with his journalism career dating back to 1969.

"The First Amendment Center offers a unique, nonpartisan voice on behalf of our basic freedoms and a free press," Policinski said in a statement. "Our work with educators, lawyers, judges, and other leaders in government and society is needed now more than ever."

Morganfield, who has worked as reporter or editor at several metro dailies, has directed operations of the Diversity Institute since June, when former executive director Wanda Lloyd became editor of the Montgomery (Ala.) Advertiser. He has been training editor/instructor at the institute since it opened in 2002.

"I'm thrilled by the opportunity to apply all the training and experience I've acquired over the years to the kind of work that we've started at the Diversity Institute," Morganfield said in a press release.
