By: Lucia Moses Chasing travel-advertising dollars might seem counterintuitive in today's economic environment, but Freedom Communications Inc. is turning softness in the category to its advantage.
Through its new umbrella multimedia sales division, Irvine, Calif.-based Freedom has scored new travel and tourism dollars in Mexico and advertisers in Las Vegas who want to attract travelers from Freedom's nearby Western markets.
Since launching in May, the Freedom Media Enterprises division has booked $900,000 in new business from hotels, casinos, and department stores, while expanding advertising in its flagship,
The Orange County Register in Santa Ana, as well as
The Gazette in Colorado Springs, Colo., and the
East Valley Tribune in Mesa, Ariz.
Ed Moss, vice president of sales for national accounts at Freedom Media Enterprises, said the extensive training given the division's 12 new account managers was crucial to landing the new business.
Proximity to top advertising decision-makers is a priority. Thus, account managers were posted in major cities, where, Moss said, they plan to visit as many decision-makers as possible in the coming months -- in time to influence 2003 ad budgets.
